Has anyone gotten into martial arts as a complete newbie in their 30s? How was your experience?

I'm in decent shape and regularly go to the gym, but I am pretty clueless when it comes to even the most basic self-defense. On top of that, these last few years have shown me that I seem to be prone to lower back injuries. Additionally, it's worth noting that I am quite possibly the most uncoordinated white guy to walk the face of the earth.

Is there a type of martial art that you might steer me towards, that is particularly low intensity for beginners?
