Hi everyone,

I’m a 20-year-old turning 21 in October, and I have a 3-year-old child (please don’t come at me for having a child so young). I’m currently living with my parents while trying to save up for a house with my child’s mother. I also want to give my child a good childhood, including holidays and other experiences.

I’m debating whether or not to leave the family business. My father owns the company, and I completed an apprenticeship there 4 years ago, becoming a qualified roofer. Despite my qualifications, my wage doesn’t reflect my skill set—I’m only making £450 a week, working 5 days a week.

On top of roofing, I’m often asked to handle emails, prepare tenders for contracts, and do invoicing. Meanwhile, my brother, who has been with the company for 15 years, is earning £700 a week. To be honest, he doesn’t put in much effort and just looks forward to the end of the day to get home. He has no motivation whatsoever.

I’m continually trying to improve the company with better branding and social media advertisement, but it feels like my efforts aren’t recognised or rewarded. I’ve checked on Indeed, and it looks like I could be earning around £750 a week for my skills and qualifications with a different company.

I’m feeling drained and unsure of what to do. Should I stay and hope things get better, or is it time to move on for the sake of my future and my family’s well-being?

For context, the business is based in the central belt of Scotland.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
