  1. Kampong Ayer… the water village…is pretty interesting.It’s been on this site for maybe 1000 years, and it’s one of the biggest if not the biggest stilt village over the water in the world.

    Something like 20000 people still live there.They mostly move around by boat and on foot,on precarious wooden walkways between the houses.. though there is a pedestrian bridge on the far side of the village, which leads to the ‘mainland’.

    It used to be the principal settlement of Brunei.The Italian explorer Antonio Pigafetta described it as the ‘Venice of the East’ in 1521… which is a bit of an exaggeration! But it’s nice to walk around and take a boat trip, the locals are very friendly.
