If parts of LA county that aren’t actually in the City of Los Angeles are still considered to be LA, do people feel the same about places in the NY metro area that aren’t part of New York City?

Places like Compton, Santa Monica, Glendale, Long Beach, etc are technically their own cities, but they are still widely regarded to be Los Angeles even if they're technically their own places in the middle of one big sprawling metropolis. But, despite also being part of one big sprawling metropolis, are the likes of Newark, Jersey City, Long Island, Hoboken, etc generally viewed as part of New York in a similar way? If not, why not? I get some of these places are in an entirely different state, but even Newark airport until recently was called "New York Newark".
