How lawful is security at a state capitol?

I understand law varies from state to state, but in my experience, every capitol I've visited has a metal detector and a scanner for passing through objects. It makes since that they would want to protect the building, as important stuff is conducted inside, but a lot of the building is a lobby open to the public and many parts need higher clearance to enter anyway. Is it "constitutional" to search everyone entering the public areas?
