I understand the term tenure to mean the length of time someone has been in a role, but I often hear, in American media, the term being used a something that can be attained in a role.
Google says it can refer to someone in an academic role being made permanent, but from what I can gather, "making tenure" often happens many years into a person's career.
Can anyone explain this please?
