Why people in the states tend to abbreviate and use acronyms alot?

Like I would understand if it's done at work, like use abbreviations to keep a faster flow in a conversation or in a criminal setting, but man you guys literally created an acronym for kissing and hugging your partner (PDA). Is it like a cultural thing? A generational thing? Or it's just to feel "cool" and create new vocabulary to set yourself apart from others?
