How would you handle noisy neighbours?

I'm renting a house and the next door neighbours have loud conversations late into the night. Sometimes they play music too. I'm considering either writing them a note and slipping it into their mail slot, or going over in the day and actually asking them to keep the volume down face to face. Which would you recommend? I'm also open to other suggestions.
