Are rail replacement bus services really that bad?

I have pathologically avoided them my entire life, and have the unfounded assumption that they are absolutely hellish. I would very much like to be reassured that it's just a case of horror stories generating the most attention, and that usually they're just "fine", as I may be forced to take such a journey in a few weeks time. Share your good/bad/average experiences below!
