genuinely lost on this one: How do I talk politics with a hyper-partisan reactionary in the US without its devolving into shrieking and name-calling?

I recently spent 8 hours in the same car with the above, we are only acquaintances but the subject of politics loomed in the room of the car like the coming train wreck that it turned out to be b/c we both knew we were partisans on the opposite side (I am center-left he is MAGA-right). It didn't go well lol. How the heck does somebody mitigate for the inevitable by trying to effect normative reasoning and rational discourse in order to avoid the shrieking? What's the fruitful phrase that hits the sweetspot every time?
