How do you start a conversation without asking dumb questions

I know this in it self is a dumb question but when I want to have a conversation about a certain thing I always ask dumb questions that are either obvious or the answers are just really short. How do I engage a conversation about said topic without having to ask these questions while making the conversation both ways instead of just me talking
