As you can read from the title, I have been with my boyfriend officially for a year but we have known each other for two years, we met online but currently we are living together. We also attend the same Uni, I am a bachelors student and he is masters. He moved here just for me.
He is an American and I am Russian, I understand the cultures are very different however, the moment we started dating, I told my family and wanted him to do the same. He told me he will let his mom know once he goes back to states. This situation happened in 2023 Sept, and in october he told me that he told his mother about me.
Fast forward to a few months ago, I learn (he accidentally let it slip), that he actually didn’t tell his mom about us because apparently in US online meeting is weird and he is also a bit stressed about my age. (In Russia this is not problematic at all.) I was very sad and mad at him, because we literally moved in together this month, and his family still doesn’t know that I exist.
My family met him this week, and they love him. They asked us if we were serious and he said yes, however I still don’t understand how he can be serious with me when he is keeping me a secret from his family.
I am pretty sad, I don’t know what to do. Is this common in American culture? Are Americans not huge on family?
Sorry for my bad English, I am ESL. Any advice is appreciated.
TLDR; I live with my boyfriend of a year and he still hasn’t told about me to his family despite meeting with mine.
