My (26F) boyfriend (27M) always says I’m playing dumb and playing stupid when I ask questions. Is “playing stupid” the same thing as calling someone stupid?

It's hurtful.

I'm not sure why he says I'm "playing" dumb when I ask questions.

I'm academically and book smart so perhaps he has greater expectations of my intelligence?

Like when he says something, and I ask for clarification or elaboration, he says I'm playing stupid and playing dumb. And then doesn't answer question.

I asked him if he thinks I'm stupid or dumb and I said you're basically calling me that. And he said "I never said you are stupid I'm saying you are playing it"

I told him I'm not playing anything…..

I lack social skills at certain times and I have trouble understanding social situations sometimes. This is an example of one of these situations where I have trouble understanding and lack skills for basic human interaction. I'm not sure if he is calling ME dumb or my questions dumb.
