TL;DR

I (f16) love making handmade cards for my boyfriend (m16) for any occasion whether it's his birthday, a love you letter, or just anything that says miss you. We've been long distance for a few years now and I'm trying to stay in touch by letters, not just texts and visits. Here's the thing. I've had a few people tell me that I'm being cheap and that going out and buying a card for .98 or $2 isn't that hard and that it's easier. I'm trying to push those opinions away as I feel handmade cards are more expressive and heartfelt, but every so often a family member asks "why don't you just buy a card?" My boyfriend doesn't seem to mind my handmade cards and letters and if i'm being honest, he seems to enjoy those more than the predesigned store bought cards. Email and texts also aren't that good at expressing how you truly feel so I stay away from expressing how I feel on those.I guess I'm just curious if anyone else finds handmade cards better. I love making them so much but i don't want my family or other people seeing me as a cheapskate.
