As per title I have recently been working with a couple American engineers for a project and they kept saying that one is Irish and the other one is Italian, bringing up DNA percentages and what not.

The last people in their family to have grown up in these countries were probably their great grandparents.
It is wild to me (a European) to even consider this relevant or conversation worthy.

Is this a common approach to one's identity or are they just weirdos? Is it not seen as divisive/racist to consider one's culture bound to random genetics rather than upbringing?
