I like to ask "Can you get me that thing?" or to my boss "Can you give me my cheque?" in the morning at work. Is that rude, I notice sometimes people are a bit taken a back and some get pissed off when I ask like that. When is it socially acceptable to be a bit more indirect? Like instead of asking "Can you give me my cheque?" I ask "Do you have my cheque?" subtle things like that cause I feel like I come off as a bit abrasive at times infront of management/coworkers and butt heads with people in social and work settings.
