Something I noticed in commentary (both on TV and online) in American sports (NBA/NFL) is that there seems to be an unwritten rule that you shouldn't keep scoring once it's clear that the other team has been beaten – and you certainly shouldn't do any "flashy" dunks or touchdowns at this point.

Is this observation about American sports accurate? If so, how would you explain it to a dirty rotten foreigner?
