Most the time I understand how to converse casually with baristas/cashiers/bartenders ect. I sometimes do the same with customers at my job but usually I'm pretty busisnes-only cause it's not safe to make friends/meet cuties at my job.

When I was in high school I would just jump in on people's conversations, which I've since learned is rude (31 now). Just I never learned how to talk to people unless I need something ie: the time, directions, to pay for my groceries, ect. Unless they talk to me first. (Sometimes I can handle a conversation but usually I'm too anxious to say more than a word at a time)

What is etiquette for talking to people you've never spoken to before? What do you even say? (Besides compliments, which I've noticed will usually elicit a "thank you" but in my city almost never facilitates conversation) please give some examples.
