So currently under EU law everything has to be labelled in metric but manufacturers and suppliers can if they wish list imperial measures aswell.

There’s a proposed change to allow the use of imperial on its own, without metric.

Can anyone defend this change in any logical way? Its simply going backwards.

  1. It’s going to be at consultation stage as of this Wednesday so anyone can submit their response. As I understand it the proposal is to allow retailers so show Imperial only of they want to and not forcing its use.

    > Business department BEIS is to launch a 12-week consultation on Friday with business groups and consumers to ask whether retailers should be able to sell goods in pounds and ounces rather than metric measurements.

It should appear on the [BEIS website](https://www.gov.uk/search/policy-papers-and-consultations?organisations%5B%5D=department-for-business-energy-and-industrial-strategy&parent=department-for-business-energy-and-industrial-strategy) on Wednesday I think.

  2. Just a clear signal to which demography they are serving. Madness when the age bracket they are aiming is dying off.

  3. Desperate government making desperate attempt to pander to their voters.

  4. The crazy thing is you CAN SHOW IMPERIAL MEASURES NOW! The EU law that was brought in was that the Metric had to be displayed in a larger font than the imperial.

If you wanted into a butchers today and asked for a pound of mince they would sell it to you because most scales have both, the only difference is that they would charge you for the metric (which for the slower readers is the same amount).

As most people are saying it is just pandering to the good ol’ “back in my day” crowd who still think a £1 coin stuck in a card can buy you a meal out. Total distraction technique from party gate!

  5. I see no issue with it. If someone really wants the ability to do so, go mad.

Anywhere catering to normal people will continue on.

  6. We’d end up buying for example 1lb of cheese for the price of 500g. It won’t be good for the consumer.

  7. No. There is no logic. When I first heard it I thought it was a joke.

Its insanity, but we’re seeing a lot of that these days, especially from certain people.

  8. No one gives a shit but if you’re complaining about that then that’s less time complaining about Ministers’ unethical behaviour or indeed our government being utterly fucking incompetent in general

  9. The Daily Mail who want to convince people that anything new or not British is inferior (unless it’s American). It might have made some sense when they were doing it 25 years ago, or so, but the old farts that supported it are no longer around. Anyone who’s not a pensioner learnt metric at school

  10. Seems a bit silly. It will make no difference whatsoever. It’s not like the whole of the UK is suddenly going to pay for new packaging giving only imperial measures.

Even new companies won’t as it means a new design if they want to export and Metric is easier to understand by a greater number of people so it would be a very poor buisness decision.

I’m young enough that Metric has always been the standard but like carpentry and dressmaking so understand Imperial.

It’s just odd. No one ever said Imperial was outlawed it’s just easier to use Metric. It really is madness.

  11. The stupid thing is that even if we did go back to imperial measurements, we will still be using the metric standard. We wouldn’t be going back to where we were, which was based on a standard lump of metal that by definition weighed exactly one pound. We’d be like the US which also uses metric standards – ie. 1lb is exactly 453.59237g. In fact we don’t even use lumps of metal to define weight anymore, but that’s another story.

  12. I use a combination of both anyway so would happily continue to use a combination of both.

I don’t see a problem within putting both forms on packaging etc. I drink two litres of water a day but I drink it from pint glasses. I use miles per hour and miles distance but also metres. I can happily follow recipes in grams or ounces.
I weigh myself in stones and pounds and measure myself in feet snd inches but I’ll measure in my home using millimetres and centimetres.

Why can’t we just continue to use both imperial and metric? We never went fully metric in the first place.

  13. They want to go back to 1/32 of an inch for engine accuracy for reliable cars, unlike just using 1mm like the rest of the world.

  14. When the entire population is turning against you, you appeal to your base first – more so if that base is easy to manipulate and live (or desire to live…) in their own fantasy world.

  15. > Who seriously wants the law changed to allow retail to show only imperial measures?

Nobody. Stop believing the clickbait media bullshit. What they want to do is to make it legal to display imperial measures should a business choose to instead of just metric.

  16. You don’t need to defend the removal of a law. Laws should always be repealed by default unless they are useful. It’s up to the people saying it’s useful to defend why businesses should be forced to label their products in such a way that the metric measurement is always visible and more prominent than the imperial one.

  17. The hilarious thing is that we switched to metric before we even joined the EU!
