Would you rather live in Rhode Island or Delaware?

  1. Rhode Island. I’ve never been to Rhode Island, but I have been to Delaware and it doesn’t have much going on.

  2. Both are honestly pretty pleasant. lol

Rhode Island has beaches, great Italian food, and Providence – which is a really fun city with a whole lot to do. I also love taking the ferry out to and biking on Block Island.

Delaware also has beaches, maybe better seafood?, and, while I’m not in love with Wilmington, a whole lot of charming little towns (and also Newark – which I quite enjoyed visiting). The Delmarva peninsula is additionally wholly unique – there’s nothing quite like it imo.

On the whole though, Rhode Island’s New England charm wins me over.

  3. It’d be interesting to live near a body of water that isn’t “tropical”, per se… But I hear a lot about Rhode Island. Never Delaware, so I choose Delaware.

  4. Rhode Island. Spent a lot of time in Providence and it’s a cool city. Delaware is okay but can’t say it had the same vibe. I also prefer Boston over Philly which are the next two biggest cities nearby both states.

  5. Delaware. The beach locations in Delaware are very nice, and no sales tax statewide is a plus.

  6. Delaware. It is kinda a boring state, but I can be close to the excitement in Philly, not too far from Baltimore-DC, and the weather in Delaware is slightly less cold in the winter. Also, it is closer to home for me.

  7. Delaware. Warmer beaches, closer to more major metro areas, decent tax rates overall and no sales tax.

  8. Two decent choices, I like Providence, an old city on the rebound, pretty cool. Brown and RISD are there. Boston is not too far away, can even take the commuter rail. About opportunity, there are a lot of tech companies in eastern Mass. But for chemistry, that’s Delaware.

  9. As a person that drives for a living Delaware is very nicely situated close to everything. To NYC for example is easier and faster to get from Delaware than from Rhode Island even though the distance is relatively the same, driving in Connecticut sucks balls. You’re equally closer to international airports in both places, Logan in Boston and Philadelphia in Delaware. No sales tax in Delaware.

I would chose Delaware even though Rhode Island is fantastic on it’s own

  10. Delaware is beautiful. Yep, it’s true. You just can’t tell from I-95. There’s nightlife in Wilmington and Philly if that’s your thing. We lived there several years as a you g family so we enjoyed all the parks, nature preserves, museums, outdoor music and art festivals. There is a dividing line at the canal in the middle and below the canal is jokingly called “lower slower” Delaware because its more rural, and that can mean either a more old fashioned, country style of living but in some areas its more of a Confederate flag waving, truck-nut dangling kind a place.

  11. I have family in Rhode Island, and lived in Delaware recently.

I would definitely pick Delaware. It’s milder, cheaper, less crowded, has better beaches, no sales tax, insanely low property tax, and people are friendlier. Plus it’s closer to Philly and DC.

I like Rhode Island too. IMO it’s objectively prettier than Delaware. It’s just not my vibe.

  12. I vist Delaware multiple times a year in the summer and mid fall. I’d pick Delaware

  13. Don’t know a lot about either. Never lived in that part of the country. Based purely on location, probably Delaware. Easy access to DC, Philadelphia and NYC. Although Rhode Island is close to Boston, NYC and Maine, so it’s a pretty close competition in my eyes.

  14. Delaware! Rhode Island is beautiful but you can’t beat Delaware’s central East Coast location; 20 mins to Philadelphia from Wilmington, DE and roughly 2 hours to New York City on the train/2.5 hours by bus for $30!

I also love Delaware’s “micro-culture” for local artisans (see Arden) as well as local coffee roasteries (check out Brew Ha Ha & Brandywine roastery) and the underground punk scene in Newark (go to Homegrown Bar for a live show). There’s also Winterthur (beautiful gardens to tour) and the Delaware Art Museum, in addition to hiking trails all over the Brandywine Valley (area between DE and PA). My favorite public garden (Longwoods Gardens) is just over the DE/PA border and it’s internationally renowned as a beautiful place to visit with family or friends.

    I love Delaware!

  15. Delaware for SURE. No sales tax, better weather, easy connections to major East Coast cities and several big airports. There’s also just something about Rhode Island that really bums me out every time I drive through it, can’t really explain it.

  16. You could do far, far worse than either Delaware or Rhode Island

Delaware has lots of space, nice beaches, no sales tax, low property tax, good roads, decent walking/rail/bus/bike infrastructure, very nice parks, and competent government. It has the Delaware bay and is very close to the Chesapeake bay – great fishing and paddling or boating if you’re into that. Close to several big cities if you like city things. Reasonably close to the mountains of PA, MD, and VA. It has a mild four seasons of weather and somehow avoids most major storms. The area along I95 is pretty ugly but the far northern part is very hilly and wooded, and the rest of the state has a lot of farmland, forests, and marshland. Home of the University of Delaware FIGHTIN’ BLUE HENS and the Delaware State Hornets!

    I mean, don’t come here, it sucks…

  17. Delaware. Cheaper than RI and with a better climate IMO. You can easily make day trips to 4 major cities and the DE or NJ beaches.

  18. Rhody! Rhody! Rhody! I lived in RI for a few years (Watch Hill, Westerly, that area). I went to URI for grad school. RI has great beaches, interesting history, beautiful towns, a major city, great roads, the mafia, sailing, friendly people, Portuguese people, Italian people, great seafood, and Boston’s just up the road . . . I mean what’s not to like?

I’ve been to Delaware and it’s nice, but pretty flat and, frankly, kind of boring. No offense. One of my brothers lives in Delaware. He’s kind of boring.
