I know what the acronym stands for, but I don’t really know what people mean when they use it. I mean, i’d expect it’s used for something funny. But more often it seems to be used for things that are really not. Maybe more as an insult?

What do you mean when you use LMFAO?

  1. It’s like LOL but for very funny things. But, like LOL, people tend to overuse it, or just use it as a throwaway response for something when they don’t want to type out a real response.

  3. Sometimes it’s more sarcastic than the words themselves would indicate. Like, laughing *at* the person.

  7. You’re right that these types of text tags no longer mean what they literally abbreviate for. They are more like emojis, they tell the reader something about the intended tone of the response.

    Imagine you watch a video of a person falling down. And then these are the comments:

    *looks like that hurt omg* Translation: I am genuinely concerned that the person might be injured. OMG usually denotes seriousness, shock, or surprise.

    *looks like that hurt lol* Translation: I do not think this person was truly injured. However, watching this video caused me to smile slightly. LOL lightens the mood, it’s like smiling while speaking.

    *looks like that hurt lmfao* Translation: This person appears to be doing something dumb, and if they are injured it is a natural consequence of their own actions. Plus, I actually chuckled while watching this video. LMFAO is for real humor, plus a little touch of “they got what they deserved.”

  8. That we found something so funny, we are laughing hard. What they are laughing about is a whole different matter. They might genuinely mean that they found something you said funny and great or they might be laughing at you and found what was said to be really ridiculous.

    So I wouldn’t say it is an insult per say, it just depends on the context.

    Lmao, mean laughing my ass off. Where you laugh so hard you feel tired afterwards.
     

    However, this in the internet and some people randomly use them for situations that might not be as funny. It doesn’t mean it isn’t funny at all, but not as funny as they implied, most of the time.

    It’s just meant to signify laughing at something a lot. Hell, I imagine a lot of the time when people type lol or lmao, they aren’t even actually laughing. Smiling sure, but not laughing.

  12. Laugh My Fucking Ass Off. I don’t think I’ve used that acronym in a long time, I always associate it with the guys that did Party Rock Anthem. I use LMAO instead.
