i went to see my boyfriends family for the first time a few days ago and was so nervous that i only spoke a few sentences. most of the time i was very quiet and didn’t add much to conversations. at one point it was just me and his sister in law and she pointed out how quiet i am. she then called me uptight and gave me alcohol to try and calm me down i guess. it made me feel weird. this is one of the first times someone’s pointed out how weird i act when my social anxiety is bad. idk has this happened to anyone else?

  1. I think most people are nervous about meeting their partner’s family for the first time tbh

  2. That’s a perfectly normal reaction. You’re observing, you don’t want to overstep, you’re in a new and important group dynamic so your social skills are very natural. Your sister in law could lack self confidence and is merely just projecting that onto you rather than putting herself in your shoes. Try not to think on this too much as it’s awkward for many people, the more you meet the more you’ll become more comfortable and also they will get to know you. If you are a naturally shy person they’ll realise that’s all it is
