What are the best ways of expanding conversation on dating apps

I know how to ask questions about certain things such as “Oh, what do you study?” “How are you finding your uni experience” and shit like that but sometimes I feel like there’s better conversation points I’m missing out on when asking mundane questions – does anyone know what I mean? Almost as if through asking these questions the conversation will move forward but not in the right direction i guess
