I’ve noticed sometimes I stay hard even after I ejaculate, while other times I get soft in seconds.

  1. I have no evidence for this idea, but the thought I’ve been a believer in is that sexual arousal, including erection, is more mental than physical.
The more mentally aroused you are – meaning how deeply you get into the headspace of your own sexuality – the longer duration your erection will be post ejaculation.

Think about it like this: you decide to masturbate one day just because. You get yourself erect, do the deed and likely immediately go soft afterward.

On the other hand: you and a partner have a date night after a long day admiring each other at the pool. You get home, give massages, engage in substantial foreplay, and you eventually have an orgasm (from penetration or from any other means). Your erection will probably linger for some time, if not even allowing you to go a second round.

The mental state you’d built and gotten into for the duration of the day, has you geared up for arousal – versus the other scenario where you banged out a quickie with yourself where the body was having an automatic reaction. The second scenario is a more wholly involved deal, bringing your body in line with your mind and overall creating a stronger/more profound experience that facilitates stronger/longer lasting arousal.
