Hi all,

I was working as a yard operative today for the first time today…. hated it 😉 But a lovely coworker told me about amazon flex, basically you’re “self-employed” by amazon and you can do a few 3 hour block shifts a week, take and deliver parcels from their warehouse, decent pay.

I’ve also heard about being extras in shows, or taking part in focus group market research which can easily net you £50 for an hour of your time…. but is very sporadic and you won’t get much opportunities.

So tell me, what alternative ways do you know of to make ends meet in the UK?

Edit; how on earth are people misconstruing me not liking being a yard operative = I hate work and need to grow up??? get a grip

  1. Have you considered just getting a full time job that’s *not* a yard operative?

Unless you can accept being totally skint your whole life you’ll probably need to get over your dislike of working.

If you got work as an extra or doing market research you would likely still have to do full time hours to make a reasonable living.

A “proper” full time job would at least be more predictable in terms of income and working hours.

  2. Never trust someone who is working with you if they say say they know a better way, why are they working with you?

Anyway, delivery jobs are all over the place.

Amazon shit is food if you have capital.

    Drug dealing.

    Prostitution.

  3. The examples you gave sound like bolt-ons to a full time salary and not actually replacements.

  4. > amazon flex

Firstly it has a wait list, they have too many drivers. Amazon Flex is usually oversubscribed and what was quite popular pre-pandemic has now become abysmal. Much like the likes of Deliveroo / Uber post-pandemic , the demand has dropped off and there’s an over saturation of a lot of people all trying to do the same thing.

Secondly you become a contractor and do not work for Amazon. You also must not to claim to work for Amazon nor wear or display Amazon branding during deliveries.

The entire process is also automated, you have no mentor/line manager – it’s all automated. So one day you’re plodding along and your contract is terminated, by an automated email. That’s it. There’s no support, no one to call to discuss/complain. Even if you have a clean record and get great ratings, their system has something which will just churn contractors out.

If you did decided to go down the Flex route I would consider using other gig jobs at the same time. As it can literally end without warning.

Bonus shit show: As it recently just completely shut down in Germany – /r/AmazonFlexDrivers if you just want to eat popcorn and read horror stories.

  5. – Part-time employment
    – Running your own business
    – Taking in lodgers
    – Being a landlord
    – Doing odd jobs for people
    – Selling things on Ebay
    – Take holy orders, live in a monastery, hey presto no expenses
    – A life of crime

  6. Learn a trade, money is liveable and you’ll save even more on being able to do your own repairs

  7. How exactly are a bunch of side gigs where you have to work ridiculously hard for hardly any money better than a regular job if you don’t like work?

Here’s a more constructive question: what is it about working that you don’t like?

  8. Do you understand a yard operative is the entry level job into whole other careers and trades?

I’m not trying to sound like a knob but you sound very immature. Keep your head down, work hard, show willing and doors will open to better paid more rewarding jobs.

Don’t do one day and say fuck me I hate this, what’s easier? Maybe you do hate it but ONE day? Seriously.

  9. Have you tried shoplifting expired ham from Tesco?

…It’s risky but at least the ham’s terrible.

  10. Buy a share of GME and hope that lot are right about whatever going on?
    That or lottery tickets.

  11. You are going to get your DMs absolutely slaughtered by pyramid schemes now.

  12. have you tried being born into a wealthy family? you could be a ‘socialite’

  13. I’ve heard nothing but good things about how Amazon treat their employees. There don’t appear to be any downsides.

  14. Even at 16 I know in this world you have to have a job. It’s gonna be very hard to be a movie extra and 3 hours for Amazon of all companies is gonna be even worse that this. You have to keep pushing with any job in order to advance your career, you can’t just give up and take an easier route that you’re happy with because of one miserable day. Life just isn’t that fair for us, you have to go through some crap before you can get a foothold in an enjoyable, stable career.

  15. Lol OP just looking for answers to his question and gets bombarded with life advice instead XD

  16. Sell smack for quick money. Or weed for less money but less risk. Because only fools and horses work…

  17. Take a look at doing clinical trials. I did a few about 5-6 years ago to help save for a mortgage deposit. Paid about £1000 for 5 days of laying around in a clinic and having bloods taken. Don’t have to do anything for yourself either, they provide all meals and stuff.
