As the title suggests, I don’t enjoy social interactions. Talking to friends drains me. I cannot make a conversation interesting. I cannot even hold a conversation for long. I am what others describe as “boring”. My family and friends always encourage me to socialize more and to meet other people but most of the time, talking to other people I don’t feel close to annoys the hell out of me. I don’t want to sound rude but most of the time, I just wish they would stop talking, or something would come up. Anything just to end the conversation. Even with my job (which is I’m quite happy with because I’m working remotely), my family and friends are telling me that working remotely is not healthy because I am not meeting people, or talking to people in real life. A friend of mine, one time tricked me into what I think is just the two of us get together but then she invited some of her classmates just so I can meet other people, and I was pretty uncomfortable with the entire situation. Do you think it’s normal if I don’t like social interactions? I’m quite happy with my life right now, but I’m starting to feel sad because people close to me are making me feel that I should be sad because I’m a loner.

Edit: I am 25F

  1. It’s completely normal, I have started experiencing this more as I’ve got older. I’m a 33M and over the last couple of years, just trying to be social and hold a conversation for more than a couple of hours drains me and I feel like I need time to myself. I was talking to a friend of mine about this last week and she said she feels exactly the same way. So don’t worry, you’re not alone.

  2. Do you mean every single social interaction? If so, that’s *not* normal. Being social is a core part of the human experience. But, if you personally feel happy with shutting yourself off, then you do you.. Only you know how to make yourself happy.

  3. It sounds like you’re in situations you don’t enjoy, so that’s normal. If you’re doing something you enjoy with someone you enjoy being with, do you find it draining in the same way?
