I was having a conversation with a buddy of mine the other day whose wife needs to get a hysterectomy. She’s worried that their sex life is over, that she will not be able to orgasm. She’s worried he will no longer be sexually attracted to her. He’s been very reassuring to her, but of course he can’t help but wonder if her concerns about losing her sex drive will come true. After talking to him, it really got me thinking how best I can provide him advice in helping his wife to sexually adjust post hysterectomy. Thoughts?

  1. Having s hysterectomy will not prevent you from having an orgasm or alter the way you look physically. She’s being dramatic and ignorant. Tell her to actually research what she will be going through and quit bitching about dumb shit.

Edited to say:. Do they not have the internet?? Can’t they look these things up themselves?? I mean, seriously. C’mon.

  2. My wife had a hysterectomy for medical reasons a few years ago, but kept her ovaries to avoid menopausal symptoms. After she healed up, our sex life was better than ever. No worries about protection, no risks of pregnancy, no periods. She gets as wet as ever, if not wetter, and she seems to enjoy sex much more.

  3. I’ve been with at least two women who have had them and there was nothing different about it.

  4. There are 3 different hysterectomies, partial (leaves cervix and ovaries), total (removes cervix and uterus), and total with uterus, ovaries and cervix removed. The latter is almost solely used in the case of cancer. If the cervix is left, many women do not experience much change in their sex life after healing. Your ability to orgasm will not be changed by the removal of just the uterus. If the ovaries are left she won’t have much hormonal change and she probably wont experience significant change in libido. All in all, it depends *why* she’s getting a hysterectomy, but in any case with a good surgeon she should be just fine and maintain all previous abilities except menstruation and ability to get pregnant.
