hello! i’m from singapore & im planning my first trip to london from 6-13th august.

i’m a huge epic/film scores/musical fan so i’m hoping desperately to catch something familiar like hans zimmer or john william scores as we seldom get that in singapore.

i’m super sad to be missing this https://www.royalalberthall.com/tickets/events/2022/the-music-of-hans-zimmer-vs-john-williams/ — wondering if anyone would happen to know if they are any film scores playing around london during this period?

alternatively, i’d just head down to a prom one but i’m not sure which to choose as i’m quite new to the scene! should i just pick any as they’d all be a good experience? would it be a good idea to wait for promming tickets or might i miss a chance at getting the tickets?

also quite torn on which west end show to watch — heard come from away is the most recommended one now?

thank you in advance for the advice!

  2. I was blown away by Mary Poppins in the west end.

Edit: I wish I was funny enough for that pun to have been deliberate.

  3. Films scores it’s hard to say but doubtful if there’s a big one going on at the albert hall as you’ve linked and anytime they do come up they’re usually booked up pretty quickly. Your best bet might be to look up the major orchestras and see if they have upcoming concerts of your liking (e.g. London symphony orchestra, London philharmonic orchestra, royal philharmonic orchestra, philharmonic orchestra) – one might be doing film scores.

For proms, aside from the first and last proms, they’re all essentially the same but with different themes/music. It’s just personal preference but don’t go random, they do everything from baroque to modern day music so have a look to see which you’ll enjoy. It’s a good experience though!

West end, I’d say phantom of the opera is by far my favourite. I really rate the singer currently playing Christine currently as well (she sang in the Diamond Jubilee concert on Saturday). Otherwise, most musicals are good and again, it’s about what you like. For example, although I like the songs in Les Mis, I don’t like plays where **everything** has to be sung, I like it when there’s normal acting and dialogue mixed with frequent music.

  4. I recommend the prom on 9 August as the most tuneful one.

The main clasical venues are the Royal Festival Hall and the Barbican, so check what’s on on those dates.

  5. Would definitely recommend going to a prom if you can, it’s a great experience.

Out of the proms that you are in London for, the best one imo is Holst’s The Planets, Prom 33. It looks like tickets have all gone for it though, so you’d have to get tickets on the day
