Just came back to US. Surprised how many places are short staffed. Wouldn’t welcoming more immigrants help fill those gaps and prevent those businesses from closing?

  1. We’re at one of the lowest unemployment rates in recent American history. The problem isn’t really a lack of workers, it’s a lack of jobs willing to pay people more, so those people go to jobs that pay more. I guess you can get a bunch of new immigrants to come in and work for minimum wage but the problem isn’t with lack of workers.

Very few businesses are closing due to lack of workers though. And if a business rather close than pay workers more money to stay open, they don’t deserve to stay open imo.

  2. Immigrants or illegal immigrants?

Immigrants may be well educated and skilled, so yes.

Illegal immigrants generally come from the poorest least educated rungs of their societies. I taught ESL for several years and about a third of my students were illiterate in their own language, so they wouldn’t be suited for much more than service jobs or manual labor.

Of course, farms could make good use of them harvesting crops.

What types of jobs are you referring to?

  3. If a business closes due to a lack of workers, they aren’t paying enough. This is the market letting the business know if has no business staying open.

  4. Kind of a stupid question that presumes these are the only places legal immigrants could work.

    >!The staffing problems are because antimaskers and antivaxxers making every grocery run into a blasted crusader campaign have absolutely ruined any chance of people seeing public facing jobs as worth it for anything less than LivingWage++.!<

  6. Where they going to live? I’m seeing there’s a housing crisis all over the news. That will just push prices even higher.

  7. Yes, it would. Scabs are a very old tactic of union busters. It works like this in the modern Era.

The US government ensures unstable economic conditions in south/central America.

Convinces genuinely well intentioned Americans that we should allow these people a better future. That it is our DUTY to help these people find a better future (ignoring the fact that it is our very own institutions who are responsible for their poor prognosis in their homeland).

Uses immigrants as scabs to keep those same very well intentioned Americans from unionizing or demanding something better.

To be clear, I’m very pro open borders, but I’m also very pro ending US intervention abroad.

  8. It depends.

Bringing more immigrants would certainly benefit companies with jobs that are well suited for immigrants. That works for lower skilled jobs. It’s difficult to bring in large numbers of skilled immigrants and have them be quickly effective.

  9. In general, having more people come that won’t be able to financially support themselves isn’t a great idea. The places that are struggling to hire the most are the ones that don’t pay a living wage

  10. Yes. American right has always underestimated how many new citizens and workers are required every year.
    Immigration is Amwrican vitality.
