Maybe What you say isn’t the problem but how you say is.
You could ask for anonymus feedback, maybe your team would dare to give you a more honest opinion that way. So you’d know if they really think that you’re tough and rude or not.
As someone young who was working in construction being tough and rude isn’t a bad thing. Especially since the work we did was difficult so most people that came off rude aren’t trying to be rude, theyre just frustrated. Maybe see if you can get examples from your manager or your team about what has come of rude to get a better idea on how you can do better, there is anything to do better about.
Try to cultivate/practice more emotional intelligence not that I am saying you lack any of it. Being logical and straight forward is good but at the same time try to be a bit warm, welcoming and friendly. No one wants to take orders from a robot.
I mean, if your manager is saying something he’s probably heard complaints. Asking the people you manage if you’re rude isn’t going to get you a straight answer. Nobody is going to tell the boss he’s a jerk to his face unless they’re handing in their notice.
If you’d like to change how you approach employees talk to HR or ask to take a class on management styles or something.
