The city I live in is very expensive. It’s more specific places that charge more just because of their reputation, they don’t even pretend to offer a better service than cheaper alternatives IMHO.

I have a couple friends that I end up spending more money than I’m comfortable with. For example one invited me to happy hour at a pub yesterday. He looks at the menu and points out the steak is on sale. But it’s still really expensive and I usually don’t impulsively by steak. I ended up ordering a drink and appetizer from the happy hour menu. It still cost more than I thought was reasonable. My friend ordered 3x the same appetizer and a regular priced drink. I felt a bit awkward. Afterward he got pizza by the slice.

Is it a bit rude to invite someone for happy hour drinks but then order a steak, for example? I would say it’s good etiquette to try to match the cost and portion of food/drinks as the other people you are with, and try to eat it as the same pace. Part of the thing is, if we’re going to be eating a big meal I would like to know in advance so I don’t eat before coming out. Am I being to rigidity by not randomly ordering very expensive things like steak?

  1. If someone else is paying, I match what that person orders. If I’m paying, or if we are each paying for our own, I’ll order whatever I feel hungry for.

  2. If they were paying for themselves I don’t think it’s too much of a big deal. It’s just a little bizarre watching someone eat that much while eating out.

  3. No, it’s not. You should order food according to your hunger. When I go out, I’m eating whatever I want, it’s a treat, as I eat 95% of my food made in my own kitchen. I’m not ordering chicken strips if I’m going out, just not happening.
