From singular family culture to divergent cultures within a larger society – the signals always, always get crossed. Untangling the meanings is easier if you’ve read lots of novels heavy in character interaction, from the Brontes to Tom Robbins. Read up on classic diplomacy – not the British version, such wankers – to get a handle on the concept. There are lots of books that discuss cultural body language – the dos and donts of burping, pointing, posture, facial expressions, taboos, etc. If you really want to improve subliminal communication – stage and/or voice acting lessons at the local JC.
