It seems that women are not only the biggest fans of horror movies, but also statistically the biggest consumers of true crime content. Do you think that consuming this type of content is giving you unrealistic expectations of how easily you could be a victim of a crime like that?

  1. I just enjoy watching them. Horror movies are funny brains-out movies for relaxed days.
I don’t mind if they are more on the splatter or gore or psychological horror Side – all fun to me.

True crime is interesting, but more out of curiosity. The darkness in humans was always interesting to me and I read about such stuff since my teenage years.
Like articles about killers like Haarmann and others.
But I’m not for exploitative true crime content.
The only person that does it in a manner I watch is Kati Winter.

And no, I don’t think it changes my perception of risks to myself in my daily life. I know how messed up parts of humanity are, but I know how low the crime rate in Germany is and that the highest risk for a woman is her partner. And since my husband isn’t a danger to me, I’m pretty chill at that point.
I’m quite strong and good in self defense too, so I’m not afraid when I’m out alone at night in the city. I can handle myself pretty well.

  2. I watch them because it is fun to get scared, within a safe environment. I hardly watch the scary stuff though. And no I don’t think it affects how I see the world but it does make me a bit more wary of people, but the trick is not to allow it to get to me, I don’t go out looking for signs.

  3. I watch them because I’m an adrenaline junkie and the thrill is exhilarating. But I don’t by ANY means think that consuming this content makes me believe I could be a victim more easily. In fact, I believe the opposite happens. I’m not afraid of anything. Not a single thing. I’ll happily walk around at night on my own and I’ll happily leave my front door unlocked, just as two examples. (Because I know a lot of women are paranoid about these two things in particular) Sure, I could get an intruder or something, but I fully believe I’d fuck em up.
