I read in a thread of border porn, for those of you living in Philly, the road suddenly becomes shit when you cross the county line, like that scene in Spongebob.

Philly residents, do you have a photo to confirm?

  1. I’ve never particularly noticed that, but transitions like that do pop up in some places

  2. Can’t speak to that area specifically but you see this on the ME and NH state borders.

The roads have different maintenance schedules. So the NH side may have just been resurfaced while the Maine side may not be done until next year or vice versa. So one side looks pristine while the other is in rough shape.

You see the same thing on roads between different towns in Maine too. The local DOT will do their section up to the town line so it looks brand new but the next town over won’t get to resurfacing the road until later.

  3. I’m not in that area, but I was looking at some property not far from me in Florida and I didn’t realize it was almost directly on the county line. To say it was noticeable is an understatement. It was like a transition from a paved road to a gravel road. It was still paved, but it didn’t look like it was ever maintained.

State borders are often pretty similar. You notice almost right away in some instances

  4. I’m from that area and drive it at least monthly to visit friends in Montco from Delaware. I don’t see a *dramatic* change in road conditions. Road conditions are just shit everywhere around here.

  5. Not the same exact roads but from my experience there is a difference between the NJ Turnpike and the PA Turnpike.

With the PA turnpike generally being in worse condition.

  6. Pennsylvania as a whole seems predisposed to that problem, though I can’t say I’ve specifically experienced it in the Philly area.

  7. Yes. I have lived in Montgomery County and Delaware County (both Philly suburbs) and now live in Philadelphia. The quality of the roads in Philly definitely worse than it ever was in my experience in the suburbs.

  8. I’ve never seen SpongeBob, but it’s pretty real. That’s funny that it made a cartoon. I’m sure they’re exaggerating the hell out of it for comedy, though. Post link to the video if you have one.

The one up by Elkins Park is a good example.

Hopefully this works. When you go over the Cheltenham ave. overpass you’re in Montgomery county. Look at the old big houses set back from the road and all the trees.

Or, did you literally mean the quality of the surface of the road?

  9. It’s definitely true at the border into Oklahoma from basically any bordering state. If you’re a passenger you can play the “close your eyes and guess when we’ve entered Oklahoma” game, it’s fun because everyone always wins.

  10. Yes.

Source: Born in Philly and lived there almost 40 years, now living in Montco.

  11. The border between Beverly Hills and Los Angeles often travels down the middle of the street. You can tell where this happens because BH only surfaces their side of the street and the LA side is always in much worse repair.

  12. If you want another example of this, check any rural road as it crosses into South Carolina. Worst roads I’ve ever driven on.
