In a recent [tweet](https://twitter.com/vonderleyen/status/1537739940942991360?s=20&t=p2qoNlOmuFMZ-eP1kwht2A) Ursula von der Leyen said ‘Ukrainians are ready to die for the European perspective.’ In a [statement](https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/STATEMENT_22_3822) regarding the application of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia to the EU she – in the name of the European commission – recommended to the Council that all three countries are ‘given a European perspective’, which differs from the candidate status. It seems this is not something of a formal nature, but it is nevertheless interesting since it is explicitly stressed.

How would one interpret this?

  1. As I understand it, she was trying to say that she will propose that these countries be granted EU candidate status, despite the fact that they do not yet meet the conditions, so basically taking shortcuts
