Hello all and I hope you are doing well.

So basically as the title says I have had an outstanding debt of 500 pounds to Brighton and Hove City Council from a house I shared with my flatmates in 2017(I was student back then but I had to pay council tax for the two months that were left in the housing contract while I had graduated). We did pay all of this tax to an enforcement agent in 2019.

Fast-forward, one month ago I received a letter that says that I owe money for this specific address from a different enforcement agent. I contacted them saying that I have paid all of this to another agency and they told me to contact the Council. I did that and I told the Council that I have the bank transfer from my bank statement as a proof. What they told me is that I need to contact the first agent that has taken the money, but has not given it to them(!). They want to me to retrieve back the payment and pay the new agent the amount of money that they ask.

I am quite furious by all of this and I am wondering whether I have to do all of this since the money has left my bank account and as I assume it is THEIR issue to solve it between them.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks a lot!

  2. I would be supplying evidence of your payment ok full to the original enforcement agent and telling the council to reclaim the money from them.

When the council transferred the debt to the enforcement agents they were collecting on behalf of the council and were in effect their agents.

  3. I’d suggest posting it over in /r/LegalAdviceUK There’s a regular over there who is very familiar with council tax laws and procedures.

  4. That’s actually strange debt agencies usually buy the debt from the company and when you pay the money the debt agency keeps the money as they have already paid the place you originally owned the money to.

  5. Go doctors get meds for stress, get partner to do same…if you have documents to prove its paid you will be fine, sue the shit bags for as much as possible.
