I am on that camp. Sometimes people get angry and yell at food service workers over things that aren’t even in their control. Like something being discontinued, company policies, or the prices for example
I’m in that camp. I think it would give people a better understanding of how the industry works (it’s not your servers fault the food is wrong, that’s the kitchen or the cashier not being in control of the prices, that’s corporate) and general empathy/understanding of what people deal with on a regular basis.
I think everyone should work in some kind of customer-facing job when they’re young so they learn to be kind to service workers and see them as human. If not food, then retail or hospitality.
I believe everyone should work in customer service, but not necessarily food.
I worked as a bartender for a while, and I for sure think that everyone should do some sort of hospitality job some time, just because it makes you so much more aware of what little things guests can do to make your job nicer and easier. It’s the smile and thank you that made me like certain guests, and it’s those little things that I do to other service workers when I’m out, that I hope make their job easier.
As for the bartending part, it played a pretty big role in me becoming sober, just because I observe the behaviour of inebriated individuals so often that it almost turns me off from that sort of excessive drinking.
Also, a killer workout with those 14 hour shifts. Not only I’d walking around great for getting plenty of steps in, shaking cocktails does wonders for your arm and upper back muscles when you do it so often and for so long.
Considering everyone who’s physically capable should learn to cook food for themselves, then yes everyone who can should also serve food. Just for the perspective of seeing what goes on behind the scenes and understanding not everything can be controlled. Shortages happen, mistakes happen, and servers get a lot of flack that they don’t deserve.
