I was watching the above YouTube when, around the 43 second mark, a guy with an English accent mentions coming to visit DC only to find that out government was in a shutdown. Is insurance to cover that risk a common/available thing (even with passport/visa related stuff, not just vacations), or do most people who make the trip just try to make sure to plan vacations around that possibility?

  1. We buy travel insurance, but something like that would not be specifically listed. Anyway, even if it was shut down, it might not have a major impact on the holiday.

  2. Mainly we buy horribly expensive travel insurance for the US to cover us for health emergencies, or your general approach of suing anything that moves (for the avoidance of doubt this is exaggeration for comic effect).

I wouldn’t consider government shutdown, basically ever. If it was in the news a lot in the days before the holiday I would do some googling to check it didn’t affect my plans. If I was a massive democracy nerd and planning to visit seats of government I guess things would be different.

  3. No idea about that specific scenario, but on a related note I find it funny that in some insurance companies there are two options given when getting a travel insurance – valid for [“all over the world except the USA” or “all over the world, including the USA”](https://i.imgur.com/KACUS9u.png).

Needless to say that the price increases if you choose the latter option, for obvious reasons (it’s mind-numbingly expensive if you get sick or into other trouble).

  4. My credit card has automatic travel insurance worldwide, including the USA. What’s the dangers of a government shutdown to Non-Americans btw?
