I’ve been work at this company for 6 months now. There is a girl in another department I’d like to get to know better and possibly date. Our department don’t overlap so I only see her if we happen to be at the coffee or running out of the building for the day.

For context I haven’t dated anyone in past few years. I blame covid, but it was more than that. I’m 33 and have had trouble dating after high school. My social skills are okay, but I’m bad with small talk that’s more than a few sentences. What do you recommend I do to start a work friendship with her?

    Do not.

  2. Get to know her for her. Find out what she does after work and on the weekends. Don’t invite yourself along or suggest you do stuff together right away. Listen to what she says and then follow up a few days later. “You said you were going to a concert. How was it?”.

Because it is a work place, take it slow and ask permission before crossing any boundaries. “Would it be okay if I sent you a text sometime after work?”. You are going to have to be very sure she is comfortable with you and clear communication will be key if this ever moves forward because you are going to have to act differently at work than you would outside of work.
