Is it weird to message someone I barely talked to in school asking if they want to grab a coffee and catch up?

Hello!

I am currently in my home country, which I used to live in up until I was 14. I am very very bored and, unfortunately, due to poor social skills when I was young, I barely made any friends, and the two I did make are not currently here. There are some people though that I know are here, which I knew in school but wasn’t really close friends with. I am very interested in meeting more people here and getting to know them, so I was wondering if it would be socially acceptable to message them asking if they want to catch up? If so, how would I go about it?
