Hi. I’m from Austria, and today I cooked a really traditional dish – Frittatensuppe. It is a broth, usually beef, with so called Frittaten in it, which are basically pancake stripes. We make a thin kind of pancake here, called Palatschinken, which are like french crepes. And we cut them in stripes and put them into the broth. It is delicious and nearly everbody likes it here, but I also thought, this kind of soup must look very weird to tourists.
So I was wondering, do you have kind of weird dishes in your country, that everybody visiting should at least try once?

  1. Bavarian Weißwurst floating in a bowl of hot water look ghastly at first but they’re absolutely delicious.

  2. I’m not telling you to try it, but Tote Oma (Dead Grandma) or Verkehrsunfall (Traffic Accident) tastes neither as bad as it looks nor as bad as it sounds. It’s a cooked mix of blood sausage, pork rind and groats.

  3. I think most of our different kinds of ‘stamppot’ (hotchpotch? Mashed potatoes and vegetables) look pretty bland and boring but they are actually delicious! As it ‘snert’, a thick Dutch pea-soup. It looks like puke but it’s so delicious!

  4. Ritschert is a barley stew with beans and smoked meat, doesn’t look like something but is really good.

  5. Haggis is good when it’s 1) good quality 2) cooked right. Haggis pakora is my favourite, I love haggis on my pizza, haggis and sweet chilli is an amazing combo.

It doesn’t look great nor smell great when cooking, and it is sheep intestines mixed with some oats, so – it won’t be for everybody. If you ever visit Scotland though you must try it. Even in the non traditional way like pakora or pizza!
