  1. You can use your Railcard with any ticket type. As long as you select a Railcard discount and make sure you have your Railcard with you. Can use with a ticket bought from an app, from a ticket machinery, whatever.

  2. Buy your ticket on whatever train ticket app you use, select that you use 16-25 Railcard, buy ticket and when the conductor/if the conductor comes show him the ticket you bought and your Railcard. You might be asked to show it at the station too when you scan your ticket at the barriers (if your station has them)

  3. When you buy the ticket (either via Trainline, or better, the train companies own app) there’ll be an option to select what card you’ve got and it’ll discount the appropriate amount. Just make sure you’re able to display it along with the ticket when travelling, so ensure your phone’s not too low on battery if a digital one.

  4. Just to say trainline is rarely the best option. They charge booking fees on top. Every ticket they sell is available slightly cheaper by whoever is your local train company.

  5. Tick the box when buying the ticket (online or with a ticket machine).

It’s based on honesty, or rather the fear of punishment if you can’t produce the railcard along with your ticket when a ticket inspector wants to see it. Induced honesty, as it were.

  6. My railcard app failed on me when I was on 6.30am train – conductor said I had to show proof of railcard or I’d have to buy new ticket. Railcard customer service didn’t open till 8am, but they just managed to reinstate my card before I arrived at York. Moral is make sure you have an offline version either printed, physical, photograph or in Apple wallet as internet connection dodgy on trains
