I like to ramble on the hills. I was recently gifted a ‘bee bomb’ box of seeds. I didn’t really know where to throw them, whether there’s a good or bad place. I chose a random spot on a hill but am not convinced it worked. Does anyone here with seed knowledge have any advice?

  1. It pays to see what type of plants are growing in the area, plants grow and thrive in a location for a reason.

  2. We made our own and experimented on a patch of ‘meadow’ we are growing on what was lawn and it worked quite well. Most of the seed in these things are meadow plants so the best place to use them would be disturbed ground that will not get cut, ours did best on the muddy path across the lawn.

If you are serious about guerrilla gardening, its best to break up the sod a bit to get the bomb in contact with the soil and gently stomp it in, although they will work to an extent if you just lob them about.

  3. A lot of these bee-bombs claim to be ‘wild flowers’ – which technically they are because they grow wild in South Africa or California. You need to check they say ‘native wild flowers’ -otherwise you’re causing more harm than good.

Also, they are designed for urban lowlands – you’re unlikely to have anything that will cope with upland, low-nutrient soils. That’s a specialised environment with specialised plants.

  4. They tend, as others are saying, to be intended for your garden. They are unlikely to work in the hills.

  5. I think our front garden gravel is seed bombed by somebody local and I _fucking hate it_.

The other week I removed over 10kg of weeds from our gravel patch, only 3×0.5m big. I did the same a few months ago. New weeds are already growing through, 2-5cm long.

So please for the love of god use them on somebody who deserves it
