There is a light-hearted series touching on many of those things while primarily focusing on state borders entitled [How the States Got Their Shapes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_the_States_Got_Their_Shapes).
You can find full episodes on youtube here and there.
Edit: [One example](https://youtu.be/cdwsNOeuMm4) (haven’t seen a full playlist yet)

This one is also enjoyable, giving you a foreigner’s perspective:

Not quite a documentary, but a fun travel video on [North Dakota](https://youtu.be/kISB5sum51Y)
Priced Out: 15 Years of Gentrification in Portland, Oregon does a pretty good job of capturing the frustration of the massive change and growth of the Portland metroplex. It walks back how the area basically got to this point. How lower socioeconomic areas are now gentrified rich areas that have forced out people into shitty situations.
History Channel has an episode for every state. How the States Got Their Shapes is the name of the show
People could do a whole TV show on Virginia History. That said, there are many events that are of national significance.
Season 1: Jamestown to just before the American Revolution
Season 2: American Revolution, contributing to the US government setup, years leading up to Civil War
Season 3: Civil War
Season 4: events since then- tribal relations, segregation, influx of people from other states,
Edit: documentary on Virginia tribes made by the Virginia Department of Virginia- https://youtu.be/lqGOhyIear0
I know there’s one on prime about Muscle Shoals Alabama and all the music that’s been recorded there over the years. No idea how good it is, and it’s pretty specific to one area, but it’s a big part of our culture.
Muscle Shoals is an awesome documentary about the music scene in Alabama and the enormous influence it had on the music of the 60s and 70s
If you’re into books, [James Michener wrote a historical fiction over the founding and development of Texas](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_(novel))
It’s not for the light of heart
It’s already been mentioned, and it’s not perfect, but *Stephen Fry In America* has some stuff to it that’s good. I like the general tone of the thing.
