I don’t really have many friends but the ones I do have I try and stay in touch by occasionally sending texts and stuff. I was on discord playing some games with a friend after he invited me to and I said that I appreciated him initiating because that really doesn’t happen to much. I think he may have found it awkward though because it kinda revealed that I didn’t have much of a social life since I thought simply him texting first was worth gratitude. Was me wanting to thank him for contacting me weird? I just thought that I would like to receive something like that.

You’re overthinking it. It doesn’t matter, as long as you both are enjoying each other’s company many awkward moments will be ignored. And since he invited you, you should try and invite him for activities. It shows that you care about the friendship
