Why do people stare when someone’s talking to somebody?

1. Its possible that person is being noisy or wants to talk to you guys but is nervous to speak as he or she doesn’t want to seem rude and but in the conversation. I have been in those situations and one time I was at a FYE store in the mall and a group of friends were talking about anime. So I decided for once to try to meet new people and talk to them but because I was so anxious I awkwardly made a joke and one of the guys cut me off and pushed me away in a rude way because it was a “private discussion” over anime which I like as well and it ruined my day. It sucked too because it wasn’t even about their own life.
