I did not have many friends growing up, so now as a 27 yr old man, I find myself lacking in social skills; things like social cues, what to say when, the ability to brush off friendly banter without getting defensive/taking offense, is all alien to me. I used to be a very angry aggressive person in my late teens but then I suddenly flipped to being an extremely timid pushover.

I would also like to have kids soon, so I don’t want to pass on this curse to my kids as well.

I have tried pretending to be more social at work, but it always fell flat; maybe my coworkers saw through my act. So I think I need professional coaching to fix this problem. Are there any experts? If so, what are they called? Psychotherapists? Speaking coaches?

  1. I think it s called a social skills coach. My advice is try reading books on how to become a good salesman and apply the tips to social interactions. In highschool I got a part time job as a salesman and reading a lot about sales and cold calling people gave me skills that I apply in meeting new people. How I raised myself from failure to success in selling by Frank Bettger is a good start. I won so many friends with principles I learned from this book
