So a young colleague at work is desperate to get on the housing ladder. I asked him what he’s after assuming he wants a house. He called me a old square and said only bungalows are cool. I was kinda confused but apparently someone else’s kid I know is buying a bungalow too. Is there something I’m missing? Are bungalows the new hot trendy housing?

  1. Cheaper than a full house? Or maybe because it’s like living in a flat but you get a garden and drive too

  2. Did he really use the words “old square”? I think the answer you are looking for is that your friend is a plonker

  3. This is odd to me.

Tbh I am used to the idea that bungalows are most attractive for older people because of the lack of stairs; that makes them more expensive than a normal house of equivalent size; but obvs they are not as expensive as a house with the same floorpan but two storeys.

HOWEVER, I know that Covid and WFH made outside space more attractive to people, and so having the likelihood of outside space/ garden is a plus.

  4. Bungalows in the UK are specifically aimed at old people because of the very fact they don’t have stairs. They also take up a larger land footprint than houses because obviously some rooms aren’t on top of one another, so due to the UK being so densely populated, mean you don’t get as much for your money

Both factors mean they most certainly aren’t “cool” or a sensible option for young people. I’d suggest your mate is taking the piss, is due to inherit a recently deceased grandparent’s bungalow and wants to make out like he bought it himself.

  5. Bungalow’s are more popular usually as an option to extend into the loft space. Typically people buy a two bed bungalow, add a master plus office plus en suite where the loft is. Then big permitted development 3m extension out the back to make a kitchen diner + bifolds out onto the garden.

People like bungalows because they’re a detached house and tend to have more land/garden than a terrace/semi.

  6. We’d like a bungelow cos we struggle up the stairs, but they’re much more expensive than a house with the same number of bedrooms.

I’m tempted to rant about rich young folk pricing us poor old folk out of the bungelow market but even I couldn’t keep a straight face on that one

  7. Buy what the fuck you want, It’s not a fashion accessory. It’s a long term commitment not a new iPhone or pair of trainers.

They might be cool as they might be cheaper or generally have a bigger square footage in rooms.

I’ve certainly not heard this anyway.

  8. I’m 43 and we just bought one. We weren’t looking for one, but this one (as someone else said) had had the loft converted into two big rooms with an en-suite, and had a small extension at the back to make a nice kitchen/diner. We’ve not got a massive garden but it’s fine for us. It has the bonus that when we get too old to get up the stairs, it still has a bedroom on the ground floor!

  9. Let’s see how cool they are when your trying to get it on with your other half and you can hear peppa pig or conversely your trying to watch teenage mutant hero turtles and you can hear your mum and dad getting it on.

  10. People who have lived in flats all their adult life being used to only living on one floor so two floors and stairs scare them.

Or they want to live next to people who complain when they make noise after 6pm for some weird reason.

  11. The cheapest bungalows in my area start from £400,000. If that’s not mental I don’t know what is.
