Hoop cheese from Ashe County, NC is very good and worth trying!
Not here. But that weirdo state to the east of us does have something to say about cheese.
I’m not sure if Wisconsin has any unique styles of cheese. But they do have cheese shops with highly-aged cheddars and goudas (well beyond anything you’d find at a supermarket or deli). It’s always something I bring home when I have to venture in to Wisconsin. That and Spotted Cow beer. One time I brought home a 10-year aged cheddar and it was absolutely marvelous.
Deep fried cheese curds are a staple at carnivals in the upper midwest. They’re one of my favorite things to eat at the Minnesota State Fair (which is only a 30-40 minute drive from Wisconsin). Lambeau Field in Green Bay sells them by the bucket. I ate a bucket last time I saw a game there, and I think my gallbladder still hates me.
Relevant Tangent: But I live in Switzerland and America’s idea of “Swiss Cheese” is quite misunderstood.
Emmentaler is just a variety of many types of Swiss cheeses, and oddly it’s not even the most popular one here.
Anything made by Beecher’s is worth checking out. I’m particularly fond of their cheese curds.
Full disclosure though, I grew up with the kids of the guy who owns it, so I’m not exactly unbiased.
Also Cougar Gold is really good too if you’re looking for a secondary Washington cheese.
Pinconning is very good.
Limberger. Wisconsin is one of the few places that still makes it.
I like it on crackers
