(I am 6′ tall, slim-medium build, in good shape.) I am looking for a light-medium weight windbreaker jacket that will: **1.)** Provide a little warmth, but not too much (mostly for SoCal and California Coast winters); **2.)** Look good–business casual-ish. (I would prefer black or brown.) **3.)** Be water-resistant and fairly tough, or at least not get ruined by a bit of rain or dust/sand/dirt (hence, no leather or suede). I have rain jackets for serious rain. BUDGET is maybe 250-500$

I was at REI today looking around. There was a Fjall Raven I really liked, but it was too bulky, too warm, and the zipper was on the left, which drove me nuts trying to zip (I am right-handed). Columbias and REIs in the store were also too warm and bulky, and did not look very appealing. On the lighter side, there were some poofy ones (everything’s poofy now) that felt good, but I don’t like the look. Lighter than that were rain jackets, which I already have.

I think maybe REI is not the place for what I’m looking for. I would like to try on in person, but might order online with a good return policy. I am hesitant about J Crew, because their recent quality has been shite, and LL Bean’s sizing recently has been bonkers.

Thanks for any recommendations!

  1. I just roll with the black Columbia Ascender jacket. $80. Fits nice. Water/wind protection. It’s simple and looks good.

I wish it was a little warmer, but for when you’re going to work or shopping it does its job well and isn’t too hot to where you have to take it off immediately when you get inside. I tried on a few others, but they didn’t fit me nearly as nicely.

  2. Macy’s has a sale going on right now on jackets. I picked up a black Tommy Hilfigher jacket that seems fitting to what you’re looking for.

  3. I am a 6’4 tall guy, I often pick clothes from Scandinavian countries. People there are often tall as well so you usually have more luck getting clothes there. Norwegian brands have often excellent choices for windbreakers and basic jackets. They are likely shipping to the US as well.

  4. Korean bomber jackets from Wish are fucking amazingly stylish as hell

Just make sure to order like 2 sizes up since it scales smaller in US vs Korean sizes

  5. I snagged some light jackets from Ross at the end of last season that I’ve been getting a ton of compliments on.
